This weekend Tobia and I went to a friends “disputation”. A “disputation” is when you publicly defend your doctor’s thesis. In Sweden there is always a big celebration party in the evening after the disputation if you managed to defend the dissertation and got your doctor’s degree. If you failed your doctor’s degree there is a dinner in the evening anyway but then more comparable to a funereal feast, as you might understand.
Our friend Roger managed to defend his thesis properly however and we had a gay party afterwards with nice food and drink, joyful speeches and dance until late. After the actual party there was (in a very Swedish fashion) an after party “efter fest” in the home of one of Rogers Russian friends. This was where the interesting part of the party started, where you were able to study who went home with whom? And after that most of the young PhD students had had a bit too much Russian vodka, and there was plenty, this tended to be very a interesting matter.
