"I grew up on Usenet and bulletin boards". "On being a talking head from Chicago". "I'm never aware of who my readers are". "I'm just a face to you, and I'm just an assumption to you".

Friendster - developed into a dating site. Tool for viewing and negotiating articulated presentations of self and social networks. danah's profile - (tusen år sen jag var inne på friendster) - Silicon Valley-developed. Urban Tribes in San Fransisco- small group of people sharing common interests - overly educated, tech and business sectors. Share musical culture. Between 22 and 35. Burning Man. A party community. Gay men in New York. Bloggers. The Asia spread. Most users not American.

danah's research - surveys and interviews. Blogging everything - gives more data. Social network analysis.

"What is the point of Friendster?" Familiar Strangers. Dating. Hook-ups - short encounters, often for sex. Ego-surfing. Head-hunting.

Trouble-making - drug distribution. Neo-nazis (mostly out of Idaho). Fakesters - God, Homer Simpson, Jesus, cities. Fraudelent behaviors - students put up profiles of teachers with sordid testimonials. "The fakester genocide" - alla låtsas-profiler raderades.

Publicly articulated social networks (like Friendster) are not behavioral networks are not sociological networks. Social network theory - Milgram, Dunbar, Granovetter. New architecture creates new social dynamic. New kind of social behavior.

The structural equivalance problem.

Social networks need to empower - collapsing bridges disempowers.

Publications, installations, presentations & workshop papers from danah boyd.
