Google fixar SF-moln

Google tillsammans med EarthLink är två av de företag som är med och bjuder på det trådlösa stadsnät som staden San Francisco vill bygga (andra bjudare är storingar som Cisco och IBM). Deras förslag bygger på en lösning i två nivåer (vilket är intressant, med tanke på Googles inställning till nätverksneutralitet - vi är emot tiered Internet, så länge det inte är vårt nät), där Google ska stå för en gratis del som finansieras av annonser med lägre hastighet (300 Kbit/s) och ett snabbare (1 Mbit/s) för ca $20 i månaden. San Jose Mercury News skriver:

The network would require EarthLink to install about 1,500 radio transmitters -- made by Sunnyvale's Tropos company -- atop light poles across the city. It would cost $6 million to $7 million to install and $15 million for maintenance, upgrades and billing for the next 10 years, according to Don Berryman of EarthLink's municipal WiFi division.

Most of that would come out of EarthLink's pocket, Berryman said, but Google would help pay for the initial installation. The companies both said they have not figured out how to divide up any revenues their network would bring in.

Settles, author of the book, 'Fighting the Good Fight For Municipal Wireless,' which chronicled the Philadelphia WiFi project, said the Google-EarthLink proposal sounded good on its face, but wondered whether the companies would be able to recoup their costs mostly by selling ads.

'$15 million is a chunk of change,' he said. 'Do they have the business expertise to actually run the network as a profitable business? . . . In many respects there's a frenzy of cities that get aboard the WiFi bandwagon and no one knows how to pay the piper.'

Update: Techdirt om EarthLink: However, in the last few months, thanks in large part to the FCC ditching old line sharing rules, Earthlink has pushed heavily into the muni-WiFi space, believing it's a good way to get around the telcos who might now try to stop one of their paths to customers.
